Message from National Chair Steve Hartshorn to special constables

27 July 2022

From 1 July, PFEW welcomed special constables to its membership, aiming to offer support and representation to the 9,174 specials actively volunteering across England and Wales.

PFEW, National Chair Steve Hartshorn said: “As the undisputed voice of policing we believe everyone should be represented fairly in all that they do for policing, it is an incredibly positive step forward that special constables now have the option to receive the same protection, support, and representation as their full-time colleagues.

“As members, special constables will have access to all PFEW services and receive the support of trained and accredited federation reps, our legal service providers and other experts who have vast experience in representing and supporting officers. They will also have access to many other benefits provided local and nationally by accredited providers who offer discounts on financial, health, travel, legal, home, vehicle and telecoms products and services.

"I would encourage the special constables who are interested in joining as members to contact their local federation representatives, local branch board or visit the PFEW website to learn more.”

“Special constables showed so much commitment for their efforts during the pandemic and their continued work side-by-side with full time officers has solidified their great value to the force.

“Having the specials receive the same representation as their full-time colleagues allows us to show them that the work that they do is just as important and that the vital work they do is officially recognised.”
