Post Incident Procedures (PIP) Training Seminar

The Police Federation of England and Wales hosted a Post Incident Procedures (PIP) Training Seminar on 11 and 12 September 2023 which included the following:

  • Looking at a PIP process case study - from initial call, up to and including a coroner's inquest
  • Legal input identifying DSI enquiries that fall outside of a PIP process
  • Memory recall and the effects of stress and fatigue
  • Importance of Stage 3
  • Panel discussion of key PIP issues
  • Unconscious Bias session led by a specialist professor

This is a topic which carries so much importance, not only for the world of firearms, but also operational policing. The process must be balanced against the support that the officers involved in an incident require; our seminar helped to equip workplace reps, post incident managers, chief officers, firearms officers, custody officers and force incident managers, to ensure officers are fully supported throughout the PIP process.

It is the proven way of achieving best evidence, tried and tested by every court in the land. It works, and PIP trained Fed reps are acknowledged as subject matter experts.

There is always a degree of apprehension when a PIP is declared, especially when an official “non conferring” notice is issued and the Fed bring the solicitors in, but remember, you can only be involved in a PIP if there is no allegation of a breach of professional behaviour or criminal allegations.
