A Police Federation member has received compensation after Federation-funded legal support helped challenge an unlawful arrest.

The officer was arrested while at work following allegations that were later investigated. The member believed the arrest was unnecessary and sought support through the Police Federation's legal assistance scheme.

After reviewing the case, Federation-funded solicitors agreed there were strong grounds to pursue a claim and worked closely with the member throughout the process.

The arrest had a significant impact on the officer. They spent almost 19 hours in custody, remained under investigation for several months, had their phone seized and required counselling support as a result of the ordeal.

An early compensation offer was rejected after legal advisers felt it did not fully reflect the impact the experience had on the member. Further evidence was gathered, including medical evidence, and negotiations continued.
The case was eventually settled, with the officer securing a five-figure compensation payment.

Acting Deputy National Secretary Simon Kempton said: "This case shows the importance of having access to expert legal support when officers need it most.

"Thanks to Federation-funded legal representation, our member was able to pursue their case and achieve a positive outcome. It is another example of the protection and support available through Federation membership."
