FOI 00183 - Legal costs at inquests after death in police custody 2018

Request:

Received: 22 August 2019

During the calendar year of 2018 what was the total spend by the Police Federation for legal representation at the inquests into the deaths of those detained or following a detention in police custody?

*My question is not about costs to the Police Federation for deaths that occurred during the calendar year 2018. I am asking for costs to the Police Federation that were incurred during the calendar year 2018 for deaths that could have occurred at any point.

The Police Federation of England and Wales (PFEW) can confirm that we hold some of the information you require. There are many reasons for police presence at inquests for which funding to members may be provided and these are not solely for a death of those detained or following a detention in police custody.

We are unable to provide the spend of representation by cause of death, however, we can confirm that the total spend for legal representation at inquests in 2018 was £194,688.
