What started as a routine workplace injury became a long and difficult journey for one of our members after complications following hospital treatment left them with ongoing problems affecting their hand.

The officer suffered a serious finger injury while on duty and required surgery to repair the damage and save the fingertip.

Although they underwent treatment and rehabilitation, the member continued to experience significant complications. Everyday tasks became increasingly difficult, and concerns grew as symptoms persisted long after the injury should have healed.

Believing opportunities to identify and address the issues had been missed earlier in their care, the member turned to us for support and legal advice.

Specialist solicitors reviewed the case, obtained medical records and sought independent expert opinions. Their investigations found evidence to support concerns about the medical treatment the officer received after the injury.

Over several years, medical experts assessed the lasting impact on the member's health, daily life and future career prospects. The legal process involved extensive evidence gathering and ongoing medical reviews as their condition developed.

Throughout the claim, the member was supported by Federation-funded legal services, giving them access to specialist expertise while they focused on their recovery.

The case ultimately resulted in a substantial settlement, recognising the significant and lasting impact the injury and subsequent complications had on the officer's life.

As with all personal injury claims pursued through the Police Federation, the member retained 100 per cent of the compensation awarded.
