PC Ged Walker: always remembered

9 January 2024

Today marks the 21st anniversary of the death of Nottinghamshire PC Gerald (Ged) Walker.

Ged was 42 when he and his dog chased a suspect after a stolen taxi was abandoned in Bulwell. He was dragged along the road while trying to arrest the suspect who was driving away in a second car. Ged died two days later.

Having joined the Police Cadets when he left school at 16, he became an officer in 1978 and was a member of the Force dog section from 1987 stationed at headquarters until his death on 9 January 2003. In 1990 he had received a judge’s commendation for saving the life of a potential suicide.

Simon Riley, chair of Nottinghamshire Police Federation, has paid tribute to Ged.

“Today we remember Ged, his service to the Force and his commitment to serving the people of Nottinghamshire. But we also remember the family, friends and colleagues he left behind and our thoughts are with them today,” he said.

“Each and every day police officers risk their lives when they go about their duties and it is incredibly important that we never forget those who have given their lives in the line of duty.”
