Nottinghamshire Police Federation

Federation welcomes Labour Party's backing of police medal

21 September 2023

Nottinghamshire Police Federation has welcomed the Labour Party’s backing for the campaign to create a medal to honour officers killed in the line of duty.

Shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper told the Police Superintendents’ Association conference it was important to recognise the dedication of those who serve along with the difficulties that face policing in general.

She said: “We believe that those who give their lives to keep British people safe on our streets and in their homes, should be recognised and honoured for the work they have done.”

Ms Cooper also paid tribute to Nottinghamshire Police Sergeant Graham Saville who received fatal injuries while attempting to save a distressed member of the public.

The Police Federation and other associations and individuals have been calling for the introduction of an emblem or medal similar to the British Army’s Elizabeth Cross for many years.

The campaign has gathered pace in recent years and attracted the backing of high-profile politicians from all sides.

Nottinghamshire Police Federation secretary Tom Hill said: “More and more people are throwing their weight behind this important campaign and this latest pledge of support shows the strength of feeling it has generated.

“Police officers who lose their lives in the line of duty should be formally recognised by the state and a decision to create a posthumous medal for fallen colleagues is long overdue.

“I know a medal, which would be similar to the British army’s Elizabeth Cross, would provide some comfort for the family members left behind in incredibly tragic and traumatic circumstances.

“I welcome the shadow home secretary’s comments and hope the wait for a medal to honour fallen police officers will soon be over.”

The #MedalsforHeroes campaign has been given unanimous cross-party endorsement from MPs who have directly called on the Government for formal state recognition for emergency service workers who are killed in the execution of their duties.
