Norfolk Police Federation

PFEW Conference: Norfolk Police Federation chair reacts to conference keynote speeches

10 June 2021

Chairman Andy Symonds reacts to the keynote speeches at Day 1 of the Police Federation of England and Wales Virtual Conference.

Andy said: “I watched with interest the Home Secretary deliver her keynote speech at Conference. She did not answer John Apter’s criticism that the Government have introduced an unfair pay freeze and he called for fair pay for police officers.

“This is a subject area that is particularly important given the critical role the police service has played in the nation’s response to the pandemic. In fact, she didn’t say a word about the pay freeze but did try and justify the decision not to prioritise officers for the vaccine. By failing to address officers’ obvious anger and the valid feeling that officers have been let down by this Government on pay and vaccines has left us with the feeling that her words that she has our back being hollow.

“I welcome some of the developments she talked about – the Police Covenant, better protections for police drivers and the admission of Specials into the Police Federation. Which are actions which would indicate that we do have a better relationship with the Government which does bring some benefits to our members.

“But clearly the decisions that require money being spent on fair pay rises and strong leadership by overruling the JVCI on not giving priority to officers on vaccines have eluded this Government in the decisions they’ve made.”
