Hertfordshire Police Federation

Roads Policing Seminar is a 'great chance to learn best practice'

29 January 2024

The Police Federation of England and Wales (PFEW) Roads Policing Seminar will be an ideal opportunity to share best practice and reflect on the challenges of the past year.

That’s the view of PC Brad Glover, of Hertfordshire Police’s Road Policing Unit and a Hertfordshire Police Federation rep.

The seminar takes place online on 30 January and there’s still time to register to take part.

Brad said it was also a chance to learn from other forces.

He said: “Anything that gives us the chance to reflect on our practices across roads policing in the UK is great to have.

“We’re always striving to learn and to get better, and this is a chance to talk to colleagues across the country, find about their strategies, policies, how they do things and also how we can bring them back into Force.

“Similarly, I envisage part of the conference will be to look at lessons learned over the past 12 months, and how we can improve our level of service to the public.

“A lot of forces operate on a similar model to us and have specialist operations function that operates over multiple force boundaries, so it will be good to be able to liaise with them.

“And it’s also a good chance to reflect on the really great work our colleagues do over the course of the year.

“Roads policing is a specialist role, and we do a lot of great work in this area across the country, and I do think that service and function we provide deserves to be recognised.”

Brad said one of the discussions he was most looking forward to was on the legislation introduced in 2022 which aimed to provide improved legal protection for police drivers.

Tim Rogers, secretary of West Midlands Police Federation and the national Federation’s pursuits and driver training lead, is set to address the virtual seminar and explain forces’ progress in meeting the requirements set out in the new legislation introduced through the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act 2022.

“I’m very interested to hear that part of the conference and what the Federation has to say about that,” he said.

“It’s a large issue across the country and affects all police drivers.

“It makes a point as to how the standard of police drivers is assessed, and we need to be balanced about how we asses police drivers.

“Police officers are out there trying to resolve a lot of issues, sometimes those resolutions will come on the road and we need to be aware of the risk that poses.”

Brad added: “I’m really looking to hear from the speakers in the other discussions as well.

“It promises to be a really good event and it’s one that I’m really looking forward to.

Registration for the seminar is now open.
