Call to help colleague battling MS receive life-saving treatment

27 June 2023

Members of West Midlands Police Federation are being encouraged to help a colleague battling Multiple sclerosis (MS) raise vital funds for life-saving stem cell treatment.

Jas Kaur, reasonable adjustment lead for the Force, has been living with MS - an incurable condition that affects the brain and nerves, with symptoms including tiredness, vision problems and issues with walking and balance - since 2010.

The 38-year-old is now hoping to raise £25,000, money that will pay for private stem cell treatment and will prevent the condition from progressing any further.

“MS has robbed many things in life from me and it has been devastating,” says Jas, who was admitted to hospital in 2021 for three months.

“The condition has affected me so badly, I’m now re-learning to walk all over again. I refuse to let this devastating disease take my life away from me. I am young and want to live my life the best I can, just like everyone else.”

Stem cell transplantation is an intense chemotherapy treatment for MS, aiming to ‘reset’ the immune system, effectively wiping it out and then regrowing it, using the person’s stem cells.

“My only chance to try and stop further progression is by having stem cell treatment. But is virtually impossible to get this treatment on NHS and the best option I have is to fund this myself.”

Jas Kaur is battling MS.

“There is so much more I want to do in life and with my partner, Craig, who is my rock,” added Jas.

“Everyone who knows me knows that I am one not to give up and the most positive and optimistic soul. I don’t know how long it will take but I believe it’s possible to raise this money with the support from my friends and colleagues.

“I know times are difficult for everyone but every penny will really help. However big or small, your donation will help change my life.”

Chair of West Midlands Police Federation Rich Cooke is encouraging members to support Jas by donating.

“Having this treatment could change, and potentially save, the life of one of our colleagues,” said Rich.

“It’s always difficult to hear about life-restricting conditions like MS, having such a detrimental impact on somebody’s life - especially when that person is someone we work with.

“It’s times like these that really demonstrate the power of the police family - and I hope that, if you’re reading this, you’ll support Jas in any way you can. Remember, a small amount can make a big difference, so whatever you can give at this time, will be hugely appreciated I’m sure.”
