The latest edition of our members’ magazine – Federation – is out now.

Police officers have been offered a £1,900 consolidated pay award this year – it sounds helpful in these difficult times, but could this actually be the “biggest real pay cut in years?” West Midlands Police Federation branch chair Rich Cooke thinks so and tells you why.

With 400 new officers joining the Force over the past year, we find out how they are getting on and get the Federation’s thoughts on the exodus of experienced officers – just how worried should we be?

We’re also speaking to DC Mark Bates about the off-duty incident in which he tackled a knife-wielding thug following a stabbing outside a school. The incident earned Mark a regional Police Bravery Award, which he recently went to London to collect. Find out how he got on.

There’s been widespread praise for officers involved in policing the Commonwealth Games, but how much planning is required for an event such as this – we speak to the Federation’s lead for the Games Jon Nott.

Plus, deputy secretary Chris James gives you a tour of the West Midlands Fed’s welfare van and explains the help on offer, and we explore the idea of bonus payments to entice officers to join CID – could it work?

Branch secretary Tim Rogers also tells you why, if you’re out of ticket, you should not be behind the wheel of a police car. All this and more in this latest edition.
