The Dreaded C-Word: Federation offers support booklet

7 October 2021

A new booklet has launched today aimed at helping members who have recently been diagnosed with breast cancer, or another life-threatening illness.

The booklet was compiled by workplace rep PC Sam Hughes based on her own experience of being diagnosed with breast cancer. The guide offers practical advice and support, from checklists of what you will need for surgery and chemotherapy sessions to useful links for counselling and help with insurance.

It has been launched to coincide with Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Sam says: “Thank you so much to chair Jon Nott and the rest of the Federation for helping make my vision a reality.

“When I was first diagnosed, I really had no idea where to start – the amount of information I suddenly needed to know was almost overwhelming. I wanted to use my experience to help others in that situation and make this booklet of things I wish I’d known in advance.

“I’m so pleased and proud of the finished booklet and I really hope it can help others who are going through the same experience.”

Jon commented: “I’m proud of Sam and how she’s taken this experience and turned it into a way to help others who are going through the same thing.

“This guide is an excellent and practical resource that should be of great help to anyone else who has been diagnosed with breast cancer. I hope it shows that whatever happens, everyone at West Midlands Police Federation will do their very best to support you.”
