Remembering fallen officer

14 November 2021

West Midlands Police Federation chair Jon Nott has paid tribute to PC Joseph (Joe) O’Brien on the anniversary of his death.

Joe died on 14 November 1982 after being hit by a car while he was directing traffic in a road race. He was 48 and had been a police officer for 20 years, spending most of his time as a beat officer in the Ernesford Grange and Binley areas of Coventry.

“Joe was a hugely popular and respected officer,” Jon said. “His legacy continued in the form of charity events in his name, including an annual run which raised thousands of pounds for good causes, and with a road named after him, Joe O’Brien Close, opposite Willenhall (Chace Avenue) Police Station in Coventry.

“It’s 39 years since his death but Joe is still fondly remembered in Coventry and in West Midlands Police.

“The thoughts of everyone at West Midlands Police Federation are with Joe’s family and friends.”
