National Federation conference gets underway

The Police Federation’s annual national conference starts today and takes place online for the first time.

The theme of the conference is Policing Under Pressure and during the two-day event leading figures in policing will be involved in discussions on a wide range of currently issues.

West Midlands Police Federation chair Jon Nott said: “The pandemic has clearly made it impossible for delegates to attend the national conference in person. Last year conference was understandably cancelled altogether but this year the organisers have managed to pull together a packed agenda for a virtual event during which the challenges facing the police service can be discussed.

“I am hoping as many members as possible will have registered to listen in to the debates and that our delegates will play a full part in the conference.”

Hosted by radio and TV presenter Ian Collins, today’s agenda includes a live panel discussion on the pressure officers have been under in the last 12 months and a Q & A with a senior cabinet minister who will also deliver a keynote speech alongside national Federation chair John Apter.

Other highlights include the Women in Policing Award, discussions on pay, conditions and pensions, and a celebration of some of the nominees for the Police Bravery Awards 2020 and 2021.

Trial by media, policing protests and wellbeing are some of the topics being discussed on Day 2 as well as understanding misogyny in policing, investing in the investigators and recruitment during the pandemic.

Tim Rogers, West Midlands Police Federation deputy secretary and national Federation pursuits and driver training lead, will also give an update on police drivers’ legislation on Thursday and Jon will also be involved in a round table discussion on mutual aid before the main conference starts.
