Norfolk Police Federation

National Chair Elections Coming

10 July 2018

Meet your National Chair nominees

Members will be invited to vote for their preferred National Chair candidate from 12-30 July.

The National Chair plays a key role in the national Federation, ensuring the welfare and interests of members are at the heart of the service provided, acting as principal spokesperson, and representing the organisation on a national level.

Meet your candidates:

John Apter

What experience and skills do you bring to the role? (max, 100 words)

As a uniformed PC I have worked in frontline operational roles for all of my service until I became the Chairman of Hampshire Police Federation in 2010. Since then I have ensured the voice of our members is at the heart of everything we do.

I have introduced the 7 point plan which ensures our colleagues who have been assaulted are better looked after; this plan has been adopted nationally.

I have succeeded in the following;

• Roll out of Taser to every officer in Hampshire Constabulary who wants one

• Personal issue spit guards to all our officers

Phill Matthews

What experience and skills do you bring to the role? (max, 100 words)

14 years actively representing officers, defending misconduct cases, challenging and negotiating with senior officers and local stakeholders, achieving results for officers.

5 years as local Chairman with proven negotiation, presenting and media abilities. Actively driving the news agenda, ensuring members views are heard loud and clear.

National Board experience driving PFEW reforms, reshaping the organisation from within.

National lead on multiple work streams including; Conduct, NPAS, Local & Neighbourhood Policing.

Experience of successfully negotiating with Home Office, NPCC, College of Policing, HMICFRS and Politicians.

Representing PFEW in the national media and on stage at conference over the last 2 years.

Why should members vote for you? (max. 100 words)

I have a proven track record of making a positive difference for our officers. I will never shy away from a fight if it is in the interest of those I am there to represent. I care about policing and the people in it. That’s why officer welfare is a priority for me.

I am proud of what I have achieved locally and with your support want to bring change nationally. I promise to work alongside you and your local Federation teams to make a difference, to be your voice.

It’s time for change; help me to make it happen.

Why should members vote for you? (max. 100 words)

With most of my career in front line operational Policing, I know the issues you care about.

I have always been there to personally help and defend officers, make your workplaces safer and press for greater recognition and reward where possible.

I have achieved results both locally and nationally; driving reform to PFEW, campaigning on conduct reforms, officer assaults, driving legislation and many more.

A capable confident speaker and negotiator I am a can do team player, not a glory seeker.

A vote for me is a vote for a strong and effective leadership at PFEW and continued improvement.
