Hertfordshire Police Federation

Teacher strikes: paid leave may be available

6 February 2023

Hertfordshire Police Federation members whose families are impacted by ongoing industrial action by teachers could be entitled to paid leave.

Time Off for Dependants (TOfD) is a benefit that allows officers to take time off under certain circumstances.

The Police Federation said TOfD could prove essential in the coming months, especially for members who are parents or carers and are struggling to find alternative childcare arrangements during the regional and national teacher strikes.

And, while the majority of officers will be able to make other arrangements, members should remember that TOfD is there as an alternative to annual leave.

Branch secretary Al Wollaston said: “The strikes that are taking place across the country are bound to affect all of us in some way so it is important our members are fully aware of their rights and entitlements, including TOfD.

“Childcare could become an issue when schools are closed for the teachers’ strikes  so our members should be aware of TOfD and how it works, especially if they are worried about the financial implications of taking time off to look after their children.

“And obviously if any member needs support around this issue they should contact us without hesitation.”

TOfD factfile:

·         TOfD was put in place to ensure officers could deal with unexpected situations that affect those who depend on them

·         TOfD cover a variety of circumstances, including strike days by public services - even if these are known about and understood well in advance

·         TOfD is classed as duty and therefore entitles officers to paid leave

·         There is no limit as to how many days an officer can use TOfD, as long as the leave is necessary

·         Please note, TOfD is not the same as ‘carers’ leave’ or ‘emergency leave’.

Teachers’ strikes are planned for a number of days in March.
