Hertfordshire Police Federation

National Police Memorial Day taking place next month

24 August 2023

The National Police Memorial Day is in Cardiff next month and representatives of Hertfordshire Police Federation will be joining colleagues from across the UK to pay tribute to officers killed in the line of duty.

Almost 4,000 police officers have lost their lives while serving their communities and their courage and sacrifice are traditionally honoured at the dignified and sensitive service.

Hertfordshire Police Federation chair Luke Mitchell said the poignant event had become one of the most important dates on the policing calendar.

He said: “We are all too aware of the dangers our job entails and National Police Memorial Day gives us an opportunity to reflect on that and remember those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

“The service of remembrance is a poignant, humbling occasion when we honour our fallen colleagues and the loved ones they have left behind.”

The first National Police Memorial Day took place in 2004 and it is supported by royalty, the Government and all UK police services.

It is rotated around the four nations of the United Kingdom and is held on the closest Sunday to 29 September, which is St Michael’s Day, the patron saint of policing.

This year’s service is being held at St David’s Hall in Cardiff on Sunday 24 September.

A tribute wall is planned for people to share their messages of remembrance and support, as in previous years.

Register to attend the service.

The service starts at 2pm and attendees are asked to be seated no later than 1.30pm.
