PC Russ Wylie

It is with heartfelt sadness for officers and staff of Humberside Police that on 4 April 2015 we lost an exceptional friend and colleague. PC Russ Wylie was a highly respected roads policing officer who was sadly involved in an incident while serving the public.
His loss is felt throughout the Force and our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues at this time.
He will never be forgotten.

Tributes

Such a tragic loss of a truly nice guy. Fond memories of our time at training school when we joined in 2007, I have some great memories but what stands out most is your beaming smile and infectious laugh. RIP Russ, double crew with our late colleague PC Steve GOOD and patrol the streets of heaven. Thoughts go out to Russ's family and friends. Bye for now Russ xx

- Sarah Carr

My mate, Russ. I am so proud to have served alongside you. From your first shift on independent patrol eight years ago to your last patrol yesterday I am grateful that I was by your side for both. You were one of the best and it is sickening and cruel that you are gone. There is no fairness, there is no reason, just utter sorrow. You have saved me from a good hiding on many occasions and I am indebted to you for this. I’m sorry I’ll never ride with you again. I have so many great memories of you and I hope that one day I can smile when I think about them. Mine and Daniella’s thoughts are with you, your Mum, Dad and Roxanne.

- John Rickells

I never had the pleasure of meeting you, Russ but you sound like someone who would have been great to know. Absolutely devastating news! My thoughts and condolences go to Russ’ family, fiancée and friends/colleagues. RIP Russ, sleep well x

- Peter Cahill

Russ, we had some good times together car sharing to work and putting the world to rights and then doing our own little bit for real out at Immingham! Whenever I hear Florence & The Machines it still reminds me of you every time and brings back some great memories! I was so pleased for you when you got your dream move to traffic but gutted at the same time as you had been helping to cut my fuel bill in half! Thanks for being a part of my life, it has been a pleasure to have been your friend and colleague. My heartfelt thoughts are with your family. PC Wylie, it’s a stand down, stand down, end of watch.

- Andy Clark

Russ, I still remember taking you and your little sister to Scarborough 20 years ago. Since then we've had plenty of laughs on motorbikes and mountain bikes. Including on the Isle of Man when you 'arrested' someone for stealing a friend’s baseball cap, which helped you decide to be a copper. You grew up into a great bloke and a great copper; you were very strong for your parents when we tragically lost your little sister, Emma. When you joined me in the police, you said nothing you came across at work could be worse than that. Rest in peace with Emma in heaven. Love Bob.

- Bob Blake

Even though we were on different courses you always made time to stop for a chat, one of life's truly good guys, such a sad loss, my thoughts are with friends and family, RIP mate X

- John Townsend

“Those we love don't go away, they walk beside us every day, unseen, unheard, but always near, still loved, still missed, and very dear. Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal......" Sleep well Russ xx

All our thoughts are with Roxanne, your family and friends. Goodbye mate, and I hope we all do you proud next week.

- Tom Blake

Russ, haven't seen you for a few years but I'm glad that the last time I did, I repeatedly told you how good it was to see you and catch up! You were the first new friend I made when we started South Hunsley in the same form, and I count myself lucky that I had the pleasure of going through secondary school with you. I've so many happy memories. You were a great, genuine, funny guy, and by the sounds of things, you never changed. Thoughts always with your family, fiancée, and friends. So very sorry to be writing this, rest in peace Russ xx

- Laura Applegarth

Russ, I only knew you for a short while when we both worked in Grimsby but what was clear above all else, and something which everyone who knew you recognised, was what a genuine guy you were, always with a smile on your face. RIP matey and may you shine as bright as a star in heaven.x

- Helen Dunks

A tragic loss of a young and respected bobby. I remember you from training at Courtland Road. Rest in peace, Russ.

- Karl Bullock

Russ, you liked baked beans on crumpets, The Lighthouse Family and the Radio 2 debate at lunch time. Despite all this you were one of the greatest friends anyone could ever ask for. You were there to pick me up when I fell down (literally) and calm my nerves on my wedding day. You welcomed me into your family and you will always be part of mine. We shared so many good times both at work and at home. Our days at Immingham together are no doubt the best I’ve had even though we were SO busy ALL of the time you always found the time to beat me at The Limes Challenge. I, like many others, are missing you more than words can describe. I don’t know what you would make of all this attention but it is the least you deserve. Our thoughts are with Roxanne, your Mum and Dad. So long my good friend, until we meet again. Your mate Barnesy.

- Gareth, Kim & Harrison

I recall you as a lively, cheeky and confident recruit… you turned out to be a bloody good lad... taken well before your time... RIP dear boy....

- Dave Wescott

- Terry Sharp

Russ, you'll never read this: But since the first shift I spent with you. Your passion for roads policing, it inspired me! I have a black rat sticker on my ticket book... because of you, I have my radio in my case because of you, God I don't wear my stab vest I wear my fleece with hi viz over the top, because that's how you did it. It all sounds very stupid! But mate you inspired me! And I want to be like you, achieve what you have achieved! You took me on my first blue light run. You'll always have a place in my heart and form a massive part of my career! You’re a true gent! And such a loss for Humberside Police. Your leaving behind a beautiful fiancée and family and my thoughts and prayers are with them at this difficult time! The loss of Russ is felt deeply by all in the Humberside Police family. Lost while serving the public and keeping them safe. Russ's policing legacy is how he is thought of as a professional officer a friend to so many and loved by his family. You will never be forgotten. Stand down officer.
