The sacrifice of officers must never be forgotten, says Hertfordshire Federation chair Luke Mitchell as he looked ahead to this year’s National Police Memorial Day.
Luke is encouraging members to attend the day, which takes place at Coventry Cathedral on Sunday 28 September.
He described it as one of the most important dates in the policing calendar.
Luke said: “Policing is a demanding profession and officers face challenging situations every day to protect people and keep communities safe.
“All too often officers make the ultimate sacrifice in – there have been 5,000 officers who have lost their lives in total.
“National Police Memorial Day is our opportunity to ensure those sacrifices are never forgotten.
“It’s also our opportunity to stand with the families, friends, and colleagues of those who have died in the line of duty.
“National Police Memorial Day is one of the most important events in policing. It’s incredibly emotional and I would urge members to attend at least one during their policing career.”
National Police Memorial Day service rotates round each of the four countries in the United Kingdom.
It is held on the closest Sunday to 29 September which is St Michael’s Day, the patron saint of policing.
The online booking system is now open for people to register for this year’s service.
