Tributes paid to fallen officers

19 August 2023

Derbyshire Police Federation has paid tribute to two detectives who died in a road accident while serving with the Force 29 years ago today.

DCs Anthony Thornley (31) and Gary Freeman (36) were killed when the car they were travelling in was in collision with a lorry  between Marehay and Denby Pottery on 19 August 1994.

Branch chair Tony Wetton said it was important that the sacrifices of the fallen officers were remembered.

He said: “This was a tragic accident in which two officers lost their lives. Both men are still sorely missed despite the passage of time.

“Our thoughts are with their families, friends and former colleagues on this sad day.”
