Chair ‘shocked and saddened’ by PC’s death

17 August 2019

Derbyshire Police Federation chair Tony Wetton says he was ‘shocked and saddened’ by the death of Thames Valley PC Andrew Harper.

PC Harper (28) was responding to a burglary at around 11.30pm on Thursday when he was allegedly hit by a car in Sulhamstead, Berkshire, dragged under the vehicle for a distance and then struck by another car.

“My heart goes out to the family, friends and colleagues of a young PC who went out to serve his community and was killed in the line of duty,” says Tony.

“I was so shocked and saddened when the circumstances of his death were revealed yesterday.

“This incident is a sombre reminder of the dangers police officers face day in, day out while seeking to protect the public, fight and prevent crime and keep order. Tragically, PC Harper has paid the ultimate price and his sacrifice should never be forgotten.

Ten males, aged 13 to 30, were arrested on suspicion of murder and are being held in custody in police stations in the Thames Valley area.

PC Harper’s death comes just days after a Met PC was attacked with a machete and a West Midlands PC was run over by a suspected car thief.
