West Mercia Police Federation

Pay and morale survey launched today

6 November 2023

West Mercia Police Federation secretary Pete Nightingale says it’s more important than ever that members take part in the annual pay and morale survey, which is launched today.

Pete said that with a general election on the horizon, the issue of police industrial rights was likely to be high up the political agenda.

And he said that evidence from the pay and morale survey will help the Police Federation of England and Wales shape the debate and push for fair pay for members.

Pete said: “We understand survey fatigue but the pay and morale survey really does enable us to provide strong evidence for us to continue to push for fair pay.

“Last year’s award was better than previous years but officers are still struggling as the cost of living crisis continues.

“It’s more important than ever for officers to take part in this year’s survey. We have a general election soon and the topic of industrial rights will be very important in the next few months.

“I personally will be attending London to visit MPs in person and pay will be on the agenda.

“And the more members who complete the survey the stronger our voice will be in those conversations., so please make your voice heard.”

The survey is open until Monday 11 December.

Last year’s survey found that 85 per cent of West Mercia Police respondents were dissatisfied or very dissatisfied with their pay, while 19 per cent reported never or almost never having enough money to cover all their essentials.

Some 64 per cent of respondents said their morale was low or very low, with 93 per cent saying that morale within the Force was low or very low.

And 17 per cent said they intended to resign from the service in the next two years, with morale, pay and how the police are treated by the Government the main reasons.

Members will be sent details of how to take part in the survey.
