West Mercia Police Federation

Branch support for National Police Memorial Day

22 September 2022

West Mercia Police Federation will join branches across the four nations this weekend in remembering fallen colleagues.

This year’s National Police Memorial Day service takes place at the Waterfront Hall in Belfast at 2pm on Sunday (25 September) and branch chair Sarah Cooper says it’s a chance “to pause and remember” officers who have died in the line of duty.

Sarah said: “The National Police Memorial Day is an important one in the policing calendar. It allows the police service to come together with colleagues across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland to pause and remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in serving our communities.

“It also allows policing to show its support for fallen officers’ families and loved ones, and to show that they’ll never be forgotten.”

An online tribute wall has been set up for people to add their own messages remembering fallen colleagues.

Sarah said: “The tribute wall is a chance for members to commemorate fallen colleagues and to pay tribute to their memory.”

The impact of the pandemic means it’s the first time in two years that everyone will be able to attend in person to pay their respects.

It was held online only in 2020, and at Lincoln Cathedral last year with restricted numbers of guests because of Covid-19 measures.

National Police Memorial Day was first held in 2004 and has been held at the end of September each year since. It rotates around England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
