Memorial day service to be held on Sunday

Members are being reminded that there’s still time to add your message to the National Police Memorial Day tribute wall to honour and remember fallen officers.

This year, due to the pandemic, the memorial day service is being held online and will take place at 3pm on Sunday (27 September).

The website streaming the service will also host a tribute wall where you can share your memories and photos or leave condolence messages.

Sarah Cooper, West Mercia Police Federation chair, said: “The National Police Memorial Day provides the police family the opportunity to stand shoulder to shoulder with the families of fallen officers and pay tribute to those who have given their lives in the line of duty.

“It’s a key event in the policing calendar and a lot of work has gone into to ensuring that, despite the Covid-19 restrictions, we can still honour our fallen colleagues.

“I hope as many people as possible will be able to join the service online and add their own messages to the tribute wall.”

To access the service, you will be asked to provide your name and email address.

National Police Memorial Day was first held in 2004 and has been held at the end of September each year since. It rotates around England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Federation representatives, chief officers and the Home Secretary usually join the families of fallen officers at the service and the Prince of Wales, patron of the National Police Memorial Day charity, often attends.
