"What message foes this send?" Statement after person found guilty THREE times of assaulting Humberside Police officers walks free from court

21 September 2021

Rob Grunner, Secretary of Humberside Police Federation, said: "We totally condemn any assault on emergency services workers who are doing an incredibly difficult job to protect the public of Humberside.

"For this individual to have been found guilty three times of assaulting police officers and still not deemed worthy of a custodial sentence is beyond my comprehension.

"What message does it send out to members of the public?

"It basically tells people it's worth taking the chance of assaulting police officers because the chances are nothing will be done and there will be no real sanction imposed upon you.

"The current law still only allows a maximum of one year and we hope that the consultation to doubling this to 2 years will be acted upon and then enforced to send a strong message that it will not be tolerated."

Rob added: "Humberside Police Federation will continue to support all of our colleagues who are assaulted on duty and will continue to press for the strongest possible sanctions to be imposed on those found guilty of such a dreadful offence.

"Our colleagues are all, sons and daughters, mums and dads and have family’s to go back to. Having to go home with injuries caused in the line of duty is unacceptable and abhorrent."
