Shameful rise in assaults on colleagues in Humberside Police

8 December 2021

Rob Grunner, Secretary of Humberside Police Federation, said: “We are incredibly shocked and totally saddened to view the figures that there has been 630 attacks and assaults on police officers in Humberside in 2021 alone.

“The fact that this is only assaults on police officers and does not include assaults on PCSOs and other police staff who work side by side with our colleagues make this even worse.

“Our colleagues come into work every day, leaving their families to care for and protect their local communities and put themselves in harm’s way to ensure that those communities are kept safe. Police officers are human beings doing an incredibly difficult job and simply do not deserve the treatment they are getting.

“The fact that we are again speaking about this issue tells us that the message is still not getting home, it is not seen as any less acceptable to assault a police officer or any other emergency service worker.

“Yet again we feel that we must firstly appeal to local communities to make this behaviour completely unacceptable and secondly we appeal to the courts and criminal justice system to deal with any offenders before them to the maximum amount allowed by law. Only by doing this will the message sink home and people will be deterred by spending time behind bars.”

Rob added: “It is great to see that our Chief Constable is calling out this abhorrent behaviour and we are grateful for the support he puts behind each and every police assault, providing impact statements to the court to inform them how this impacts on his staff and officers.

“The fact that we are now starting to lose colleagues who cannot cope with being assaulted time after time after time is beyond disappointing but is totally understandable. These are good people who followed a calling into policing and are forced out by being assaulted time and again.

“No-one should have to go home to their families with cuts and bruises and the Police Federation will continue to call out this appalling behaviour.”
