Humberside Police Federation hit out at disgusting lack of sentencing to criminal who bit police officer

11 August 2021

"It is disgusting that yet again a decision has been made to issue another ‘slap on the wrist’ to a member of the public who chose to assault a police officer there to assist them.
Those are the words of Humberside Police Federation Secretary Rob Grunner after hearing that a violent criminal who bit a Hull police officer during a confrontation would walk free from court without any form of criminal penalty.
Violent troublemaker Shane Walden bit a police officer during a bad-tempered confrontation and was released from custody - because it had been "brutal" to lock him up in the first place.
A sympathetic judge said that it had been "inappropriate" to remand him in custody and he had "already suffered more than he needs to" because of that.
He gave seasoned criminal Shane Walden an absolute discharge - a conviction without a penalty - after refusing to contemplate a prison sentence.
Rob said "Humberside Police Federation are disgusted that yet again a decision has been made to issue another ‘slap on the wrist’ to a member of the public who chose to assault a police officer there to assist them. To see the comment that ‘Justice has been served’ saddens me and I am not sure that the officer or a member of the public would agree with this.
"In our opinion any assault on any emergency services worker must be dealt with firmly to send out a message to the community that it is unacceptable. An absolute discharge is no message at all to dissuade people from choosing to assault our colleagues.
"While we would sympathise with anyone suffering a medical issue in public, the police attend in order to protect people and ensure the safety of both them and the general public. This officer was simply doing that, yet to be bitten while doing so will result in them having a worrying and anxious time as they are checked to ensure they have not been infected or exposed to any diseases that could threaten their lives.
"Where is the thought, the empathy and the understanding for the officer in this? They are not even mentioned in the summing up. This is not good enough and police officers deserve more."
