The Chair of the Police Federation of England and Wales (PFEW) spent a day in Humberside on Friday to learn about the concerns of local officers.

Humberside Police Federation Secretary Rob Grunner said the meeting with John Apter provided “food for thought”, especially around pushing for a better pay deal for officers.

Rob said: “We were really pleased that Mr Apter found time in his busy schedule to visit us. He’s been up today meeting our Fed reps, as well as the Chief Constable (pictured) and the Superintendents’ Association.

“There were discussions around national issues, especially pay. We talked about the PFEW’s vote of no confidence in the Police Remuneration Review Body (PRRB) and the avenues it’s taking to pressure the Government into amending their decision on police pay.

“It’s also given us some food for thought about how the Federation can work with the Superintendents’ Association locally, and that there may be more work we can do to put forward a united front, especially now that they’ve pulled out of the PRRB as well. So we think there are some opportunities to work together.”

Another issue discussed was detectives’ workloads, Rob said: “At Clough Road police station, Mr Apter spoke to CID about how the pressures on the Crown Prosecution Service are affecting detectives and their workloads. Officers found it useful to speak to Mr Apter and I think he found it useful to speak to them too.

“We hope Mr Apter will come back for a longer visit at a later date, and we would welcome him to join officers on patrol and meet a few more of our Fed reps.”
