Chair’s shock at Met officer’s death

25 September 2020

Humberside Police Federation chair Pete Musgrave has expressed his shock at the tragic death of a Metropolitan Police officer in the early hours of this morning.

The officer was shot by a man who was being detained at a custody centre in Croydon. He died in hospital despite the efforts of his colleagues and paramedics called to the scene.

“This news is utterly heart-breaking,” says Pete, “Our thoughts are with the officer’s family, friends and colleagues at this time. We can only imagine what they are going through.

“Everyone in the police family will feel the loss of this officer and this incident will serve as a tragic reminder of the dangers officers face day in and day out as they go about their duties. They are dedicated to serving their communities but sometimes pay the ultimate price for their commitment to their unique role in society.”

National Federation chair John Apter has also expressed his shock at the incident.

He said: “Policing is a family and when we lose one of our own in such a devastating way it affects us all. The dangers police officers face every day are very real and, sadly, as we have seen, can result in officers making the ultimate sacrifice.

“There will now be an investigation and therefore it would be wrong to say any more at this time or to speculate, other than to say that our hearts are with the family of our officer who has been killed and all involved in this horrific incident.”
