Kent Police Federation reacts to the impending departure of PM Theresa May

24 May 2019

Kent Police Federation: “Police Reform did not work. Cuts have had consequences. Theresa May was warned. She didn’t listen.”

Dan Pearce, Secretary of Kent Police Federation, reacts to Prime Minister Theresa May's impending departure.

Dan said: “Year after year as Home Secretary and then Prime Minister, Theresa May cut or froze funding to the police service. It was cuts dressed up as “reform”.

“When she became Home Secretary in 2010 there were 143,734 police officers in England and Wales. As she exits as Prime Minister there are now 122,395. 21,339 fewer.

“There are also 15,894 fewer members of police staff.

“We only have to look at rising crime levels across the country and how much pressure remaining officers are under to see what this achieved.

“Cuts have had consequences. She was warned. She didn’t listen.”

Dan added: “Thankfully in Kent we have a Chief Constable and a Police and Crime Commissioner who are investing in Kent Police to try and mitigate against the cuts the national police service has endured since 2010

“We now also need a new Prime Minister who will follow this lead and support and invest in our police service to try and undo some of the damage.”
