Man sentenced for death of PC Oliver Evans - This will never compensate for the loss of a very well-loved and respected young police officer

A man has been sentenced to 32 weeks in jail after a careless driving incident that resulted in the death of Cumbria PC Oliver Evans.

PC Evans was off-duty when he was riding his motorcycle down the A683 on 16 September 2019. Graham Ellison was driving a van towards him on a blind bend on the wrong side of the road, as he had overtaken a horse and carriage.
PC Evans collided with the van and sadly died at the scene.

Ellison pleaded guilty to death by careless driving and yesterday he was sentenced to 32 weeks in jail.

Paul Williams, Chair of Cumbria Police Federation, said: “This reflects the sad tragedy that has taken place and this horrendous ordeal for Oliver’s family has an element of closure, albeit this will not compensate for the loss of a very well-loved and respected young police officer.

“We will always be here for Oliver’s partner Holly, who is also a serving officer, and our thoughts extend to his family and friends, who will undoubtedly still be feeling tremendous pain surrounding Oliver’s unnecessary and premature passing.

“The loss of any one of our police family is sobering and painful, but Oliver will always be remembered.”

Inspector Steve Vickers, senior investigating officer, said: “This is a tragic incident which resulted in the death of Oliver Evans.

“Ellison’s decision to remain on the wrong side of the road towards a blind bend without consideration of other motorists travelling was careless. This inevitably meant Oliver had to take emergency action.

“Oliver’s passing continues to be felt by his family, friends and colleagues. He achieved his dream of becoming a traffic officer in the police and was a caring, loving and loyal individual.”
