Dear PFEW,

I would like to highlight the dedication and professionalism of one of your Federation reps, Dave Lowe from Merseyside.

For some background, my fiancé is a serving Merseyside Police officer and on July 22 she was involved in an accident whilst a passenger in a police vehicle. Sadly, the police vehicle she was in collided with another police vehicle. Charlotte has suffered potentially life-changing injuries because of this accident.

She was placed in an induced coma; I was spoken to by the consultant and was informed to prepare for the worse as only 5 per cent of people with this injury survive. She was 22 years old.

After 11 days she was released from hospital and is still recovering, with a diagnosis not being able to be given with any certainty until a period of three years has elapsed from the accident.

I first spoke to Dave a few days after the accident on the phone. I was angry with everything that had gone on, but he assured me that he would ensure everything would be in place for both Charlotte and me.

As Charlotte was possibly not going to pull through, he arranged a solicitor to be assigned immediately to protect myself and Charlotte. He then basically offered us anything we needed. Nothing was too much trouble.

Dave has been nothing but helpful and a rock to Charlotte. He has truly gone above and beyond, and I personally cannot thank him enough as he has got Charlotte through some very dark and tough times.

The man is a credit to the Police Federation as I understand this is a role above and beyond being a police officer. Dave has constantly kept in touch. Charlotte is housebound as I’m at work during normal hours and he has travelled to advise and generally try and make the situation as normal as possible which has been a great comfort to myself.

On the day of the sentencing, we were away but prior to going I know he made contact with Charlotte’s parents and made arrangements to meet them and be with them all day as they are strangers in Liverpool, again above and beyond in looking after them.

I’m not aware of what recognition you are able to impose on him, but you should be considering the highest available to you as he is an inspiration and an outstanding example of how officers should deal with their colleagues and the public.

I could go on regarding how he has got us all through this. Up to now he’s been literally available 24/7. He even responded to Charlotte whilst away on holiday earlier in the year. Unrelenting dedication.

A credit to the Police Federation.

Yours faithfully,

John Kenny
