We wish colleagues a safe and very happy Christmas

“The festive season is a period of reflection for the things we feel most grateful for and a time to be thankful for family and friends.

“I know from experience about the personal sacrifices many colleagues make during the Christmas period. The demands of the job at this time of year can also feel overwhelming, and as others celebrate, police officers work around the clock to keep people safe.

“For families, it is emotionally tough whenever a loved one departs for a shift. Those on the frontline will always be aware of the possible danger they may face when they leave relatives behind and step out of the door.

“For a second year, Christmas and New Year’s Eve will be more challenging and very different from pre-pandemic times. Covid rules and regulations present police officers with impossible decisions, and the likelihood of further restrictions will undoubtedly bring further biased scrutiny from those who simply don’t understand the realities of policing.

“However, the dedicated men and women in policing continue to tackle whatever society throws at us with compassion, professionalism, and dignity. We should be proud the silent majority is thankful for our service.

“It would be remiss of me not to recognise 2021 has been challenging for PFEW, and I’m not going to shy away from the headlines. However, this is not the time for speculation. We will evolve to meet the changing demands and continue to improve as an organisation which exists solely to represent members.

“Finally, and particularly during the festive period, it’s vital we look after our wellbeing and that of family members. For those who are struggling, please find the courage to reach out to a colleague, Fed rep or friend – and know you are never alone.

“Please stay safe, and I hope you manage some precious time with your loved ones. From me and my colleagues, have a safe and very happy Christmas.”
