Sam Hughes: funeral plans announced

28 March 2023

The funeral of West Midlands Police Federation deputy chair Sam Hughes is to take place on Friday 14 April, her family has announced.

Sam, who was described as “amazing, inspirational and genuine” by family, friends and colleagues died earlier this month aged 53.

The funeral service is being held at St Chad’s Church on Oak Street, Coseley at 1.30pm before a final farewell at Gornal Crematorium at 2.50pm followed by the wake at Parkes Hall Social Club on Parkes Hall Road in Dudley.

Sam received a second cancer diagnosis shortly after becoming deputy chair in December 2021.

The mother-of-two had previously been diagnosed with breast cancer in 2017 but returned to work the following year with a role in the review and allocation team at West Bromwich’s public protection unit.

Sam joined the Force in 2003 and became a workplace representative in 2020 and was elected as deputy chair the following year and took over the branch’s wellbeing portfolio.

She was always keen to share the highs and lows of returning to work after her treatment and put together an advice booklet for anyone diagnosed with a serious illness which was distributed locally and nationally.

The Force has opened a book of condolence so that people can pay their own tribute and tributes can also be sent to the Federation office email.
