West Mercia Police Federation

Conduct lead urges officers to join the Federation

28 May 2020

“Don’t think it will never happen to you.” That is the advice of West Mercia Police Federation’s conduct lead Lesley Williams as she encourages officers to join the Federation.

Lesley, who has been a member since joining the Force in 1999, says the support of the Federation can be invaluable in times of crisis.

“On duty or off duty, conduct investigations come from a variety of sources,” she said. “The off duty legal cover is far and above what you find on the High Street. We can offer help with so many areas outside of the job.”

Lesley, who has had training in equality, conduct, advocacy, post-incident procedures and as a treasurer, said it’s the capacity to help members that gives her the greatest satisfaction in the role.

“I really enjoy the ability to share my knowledge and experience with others,” Lesley explains. “It’s all about being able to offer something back to colleagues and give support.”

Lesley, who has a particular interest in conduct and post-incident procedures (PIP), added: “The most rewarding thing is getting a member through the process they are going through, from what are often the darkest days to a time when they can start to recover.”

Lesley, who is based at Hindlip, put herself forward as a rep in 2014 after being approached by another rep who was leaving.

“I did a short term under the old regime and was disappointed in the lack of involvement, encouragement and being allowed to take work on so I left,” she said.  “I re-joined in 2018 as things were starting to change.”

Lesley believes both the Force and policing in general are facing the challenge of retaining skills, experience and knowledge, in particular the retention of detectives, authorised firearms officers and supervision.

And she said recovery of reputation and credibility was one of the main challenges for West Mercia Police Federation.

But she would encourage other officers to consider putting themselves forward as a rep in the future.

“There’s so much you can become involved with,” she said. “It’s there for you to do as much or as little as you want. It’s a rewarding role to give back to those who often don’t have a voice.”
