Nominations open for Women in Policing Awards

23 February 2022

Police Federation Welsh lead Nicky Ryan is urging members to cast their nominations for the 2022 Women in Policing Award.

And she is particularly keen for the four Welsh forces to put forward nominees.

“The awards were first launched in 2015 but so far there has not been a winner from Wales,” she said, “So I am hoping that this year we might make a breakthrough.

“This award recognises the extraordinary work our members do day in, day out while serving their communities and supporting their colleagues.

“Those nominated are truly inspirational figures and the stories of their courage and determination are often beyond belief so I am really looking forward to finding out who wins the award this year.”

Last year's winner Sharon Baker with Iain Prideaux, then chair of Avon and Somerset Police Federation

The Police Federation of England and Wales presents the award to recognise a serving or recently retired officer who has gone above and beyond their job, while on duty.

The first ever Women in Policing Award was presented to the families of Fiona Bone and Nicola Hughes, the two Greater Manchester Police officers killed in a gun and grenade attack in 2012.

The winner of the 2021 award was Chief Inspector Sharon Baker of Avon and Somerset who spoke out about her experience of domestic abuse and being in a controlling relationship.

Nominations for the 2022 awards can be made by police officers or police staff and the closing date is 28 March.

Members can contact their Police Federation branch officials to make their nominations and all nominees will receive a certificate and a Women in Policing badge.

The winner will be announced at the Police Federation’s annual national conference in Manchester in May.
