#MeetTheRep - Leanne King

18 April 2025

So Leanne, give us an outline of your career to date…

I started in 2007 as a PCSO and then in 2008 joined up as a response police officer. I moved over to neighbourhoods for a little while, got promoted and then went back to response. Having a baby saw me take extended maternity and various leave, before I came back to a custody post. That’s where I’ve been for almost the last two years.

How come you wanted to become a Fed Rep?

It’s something that’s always interested me, helping people and getting to know more about regulations and bits and pieces. I understand that there’s been a few challenges recently with the Federation. I hope having that insight and extra little bit of knowledge can help officers, like me, that have had difficulties with issues such as flexible working, part-time and coming back from having a baby. I want to see if there’s anything we can support the organisation with to make life easier for them and also for officers.

Is there a particular area you think you’ll focus on?

Being in Custody, quite a big part of our job is knowing how to deal with the DSIs and the PIP processes, so that is an area that interests me as I’ve seen it firsthand. I’m also quite interested in equality, stemming from part-time and flexible working, and how difficult it is to come back to work after having a baby. I’m quite interested in that. I think I’ll find my feet a little bit, and then find an area and take advice from there.

What would your message be to members considering contacting a Fed Rep?

Just go for it! From first-hand experience, they’re very approachable and I will be approachable as well. They’re knowledgeable and if they don’t know the answer, somebody will. Just send an email or pick up the phone. It might just take the little bit of pressure off of you, rather than it bubbling away, and just pop a little bit of responsibility on someone else. Please just contact us.

And finally, tell us an unusual fact about you…

Recently we went on holiday with our three-year-old on a cruise and they had a Lego shop. Now he’s not interested in the Lego, but we are very interested and have spent a fortune since we got back on various different sets. He has no interest in them, but we enjoy it! We enjoy building it – flowers the house from Up and all sorts of things. It just escalates.
