Nottinghamshire Police Federation

Force pays tribute to Ged Walker

11 January 2023

Nottinghamshire Police Federation chair Simon Riley laid flowers in memory of Ged Walker during a service to mark the 20th anniversary of the Nottinghamshire PC’s death.

Chief Constable Kate Meynell, Ged’s wife Tracy and son Matthew were joined at Monday’s service by colleagues as flowers were left on the dog handler’s memorial stone.

Officers and staff bowed their heads during a period of silence.

“The service was a fitting tribute to Ged and showed that, despite the passage of time, he is not forgotten,” says Simon, “It was important for us to stand with Tracy and Matthew and pay our respects.”

Chief Constable Meynell said: “PC Walker was a valued friend and colleague to so many and his sacrifice will never be forgotten.

“As we take time to remember his life 20 years after his tragic and untimely death, we are reminded of the courage and bravery he showed on that fateful day.

“We are also reminded of the potential dangers our officers face every time they put on their uniform and head out on patrol.”

Ged was on duty in Bulwell when he was fatally injured as he tried to stop a stolen taxi. He was dragged along the road as he tried to retrieve the keys from the ignition and stop the vehicle. He died of his injuries two days later on 9 January 2003.

Ged is also remembered with a memorial stone at the site of the incident in Bulwell, and by the police kennels which carry his name.

The Ged Walker Award is made each year to officers who have shown outstanding bravery in the line of duty.
