National Chair Steve Hartshorn has responded to the publication of the Jermaine Baker Public Inquiry Report

"The Jermaine Baker Public Inquiry Report has concluded that Mr Baker was lawfully killed.

"The inquiry concluded that W80 shot Mr Baker because he honestly believed that Mr Baker posed a lethal threat and that it was reasonably necessary for him to shoot in order to defend himself.

"The Police Federation of England and Wales (PFEW) has supported officer W80 throughout the seven years this incident has taken to be resolved by the findings of the inquiry. The findings of the inquiry that officer W80’s decision to discharge his firearm was justified and lawful are a welcome relief for the officer, and are important to all police firearms officers who have to make split second life or death decisions in the course of their duty.

"PFEW continues to support officer W80 in his challenge to the decision of the IOPC that he should face gross misconduct proceedings, notwithstanding the decisions of the CPS and the inquiry that the officer’s actions were justified."
