The men convicted of causing the death of PC Andrew Harper have been sentenced today. Thames Valley Police Federation and the Police Federation of England and Wales have issued the following statement.

Craig O’Leary, Chairman of Thames Valley Police Federation, said: “Today our thoughts remain with Lissie and the Harper family and we pay tribute to the dignity and bravery they continue to show. No sentence would ever be enough for the despicable crime these cowards committed on 15 August last year. No sentence will sadly bring Andrew back.”

Craig added: “We will always remember PC Andrew Harper. He loved being a police officer. He loved being a Thames Valley Police officer. Whilst the case now concludes we will ensure that his memory and legacy lives long. Police officers go to work each and every day to fight crime and protect the public. Sadly on very rare occasions a colleague makes the ultimate sacrifice. We will ensure that heroism is never forgotten. And that is what Andrew was. A hero. Loved by his family. Loved by his friends. And loved by his colleagues. He of course remains much missed.”

Craig concluded: “We must also thank our Thames Valley Police colleagues for their dedicated work in the case. It goes without saying that the past 11 and a half months have been a terribly tough time for Andrew’s colleagues and the whole force – having to carry on policing the Thames Valley area while mourning the death of a colleague. We thank all those who have offered support. It has really been appreciated.”

John Apter, Chairman of the Police Federation of England and Wales said: “My thoughts today are with Lissie Harper and Andrew’s family and colleagues. Those responsible for such a wicked and deliberate crime have forfeited their right to freedom.

“The killing of a police officer should see those responsible face the rest of their lives in prison. If the law won’t allow that in these circumstances then the law must be changed. PC Andrew Harper was killed on duty in the most brutal and horrific way; his wife, family, colleagues and the public deserve justice. This is not justice.”
