PFEW Conference: Leicestershire Police Federation chair reacts to conference keynote speeches

Chairman Adam Commons reacts to Home Secretary Priti Patel’s speech to the Police Federation of England and Wales Conference.

Adam said: “I expected so much more from the Home Secretary today and was disappointed with her speech. I expected her to take the opportunity to show how much she values us, but instead it felt like a highlight reel.

“We got the usual rhetoric about how important we are, and how our role through the pandemic has been crucial. But nothing about vaccinations, nothing to tell us that we won’t be denied a pay rise in order to pay the Covid bill. No information about the pension mess, just her personal highlights about the money she gave for a Taser uplift and the recruitment of the 20,000 officers.

“That’s all old news and not something the Government can keep feeding off.

“She claims she’ll back us - I don’t know if her speech writer made that reference on purpose, as we had a Home Secretary who said similar once – Theresa May in 2010 - and we all know how that went.”
