Meet Bryn James - One of Kent Police Federation's new Reps

Q. Can you give us a brief summary of your career history and your current rank and role?
A. I have been a police officer for over 6 years. I've spent the majority of my career at North Kent on Local Policing Team 4. Over the past year I've been fortunate enough to be an acting sergeant, and have recently been posted to the Quality Policing Team as a sergeant, to give training and support to officers around crime Investigations.

Q. What made you want to be a Fed Rep?
A. As Police Officers we spend our time looking after others and putting their welfare Infront of our own. The Federation was set up to look after officers and put them first. I wanted to become a Fed Rep so I could get behind something important and look after officers for a change.

Q. Why do you think it’s important for members to be supported by fellow officers as their Reps?
A. Working in the Police is a very unique role. It's hard for people to understand the stresses and struggles that we face on a daily basis. It can be hard to get support from someone outside of our world. Having Fed Reps as fellow officers allows you to have someone to turn to, who will understand the situation, and will be able to give you the correct support and advice. They will know how to best look after you!

Q. Which areas in particular are you looking forward to focusing on?
A. I am very keen to get stuck into welfare and misconduct. Being placed under investigation can be a terrifying and isolating experience. Hopefully I will be able to make a difference and support officers through these tough situations. Ensure that their welfare is properly looked after.

Q. What should members do if they’re concerned about anything?
A. Find a Fed Rep and speak to them! We are all passionate about helping our colleagues and will always make time for you if you need it.

Q. What would you say to colleagues who might wonder where their subs go?
A. There is so much to the Federation, that I myself was never aware of. It goes far beyond just legal advice and support. Your subs go towards helping the police family and giving back to officers as much a possible.
