Public saved from dangerous man armed with meat cleaver

Twelve officers tackled a man who was threatening bank customers with a meat cleaver and a drum of petrol. Calls were received from terrified members of the public as the man brandished the weapon and set light to the petrol he had poured in the buildings. Firearms officers ran into Barclays to see the suspect trying to start a fire. They discharged two extinguishers and deployed a Taser. Officers then chased the suspect through the interchange where firearms units were able to stop him.

The officers involved were PCs Robert Toyn, Joe Gorman, Amy Edwards, Olivia Bailey and Neil House. The seven firearms officers, who were among the 12 nominated for the award, wish to remain anonymous.
