Support for policing

11 May 2020

Several well-known public figures have recorded videos to offer their support for the work being done by police officers around the country.

Four-time Great Britain Olympic skier Chemmy Alcott launched the series last Friday (May 8) in support of the national effort during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Other people who are pledging their support for the efforts of the police are bike legend Steve ‘Stavros’ Parrish and race drivers turned commentators Paul O’Neill and Tom Gaymor.

There are also some special words of support from ex-Met Chief Superintendent and now author, John Sutherland, who wrote ‘Keeping The Peace and Falling to Pieces’.

Starting the series of videos, Chemmy takes the chance to thank officers ‘working unimaginable hours, often working away from their families in order to not bring the infection home’.

The seven-times Senior British National Champion adds: “They are out there risking their lives to prevent crime, to keep the streets safe.”

Derbyshire Police Federation chair Tony Wetton said he supported any extra help for members as they take on the challenges faced by the coronavirus.

“Derbyshire officers have already put their heart and soul into keeping the public safe and protecting the NHS during this national effort against COVID-19,” says Tony.

“They have families at home too and this is a very testing time for them personally as well. Any messages of support and good luck they receive are welcomed.

“The gratitude of the public provides them with a big morale boost and that is important because this is a lengthy battle and we know there is still a long way to go.”
