Primary Function

  • The job of the Senior Communications Officer is to design, coordinate and deliver compelling tailored content supporting our membership and wider issues in policing
  • To promote a positive image of the work of the Police Federation of England and Wales to a range of internal and external audiences, developing an agenda of work to deliver against the requirements of the overarching communications strategy
  • Acting as an insights guide and trusted advisor for members of our executive team, National Board and National Council, in addition to supporting the team across internal communications, media, events and PR space
  • To support the production of creative and compelling communications work undertaken by the team, dealing with publicity projects, campaigns and assignments as directed by the Communications Manager
  • Identifying and securing forward-looking opportunities in both media and internal communications channels, analysing feedback and statistics to measure success across platforms from web copy to social

Responsibilities and Duties

  • To creatively write a range of content for a variety of audiences, to be published across channels, including magazine articles, profiles, presentation abstracts, Op-Ed’s, stage scripts and prepare a variety of digital and print materials in adherence with the PFEW style guides
  • To identify, develop and generate appropriate digital content, within authorised parameters, for use across all relevant e-channels, on a national and local basis, ensuring all content input is current, accurate and consistent with approved branding and writing style
  • Schedule and lead calls with subject matter experts, police officers and journalists, developing trusted relationships with community influencers
  • Collaborate with marketing, operations and other business units to ensure alignment with event strategy and delivery
  • Conduct efficient and independent research on future-leaning topics
  • To update and maintain sufficient professional activity across all PFEW social media accounts, using sufficient judgement and discretion to respond appropriately, escalating contentious and sensitive issues as required
  • Support internal departments to communicate with our membership, providing high-level customer service to all enquiries
  • Evaluate content quality of communication campaigns and products to achieve continual improvement
  • To undertake and develop the production of publicity and promotional materials particularly in relation to communications work
  • To undertake and develop any communications activity for annual events such as the National Police Bravery Awards, National Police Memorial Day and Annual Conference
  • To attend briefings, meetings and events on behalf of the Communications Department, identifying opportunities for good news stories and improved communications, internally and externally
  • Manage content projects, create and deliver departmental training, and provide support to communications colleagues as needed
  • The post-holder is expected and required to participate in the out-of-hours on call rota, within the defined parameters
  • Regular travel between London and Leatherhead is required, with some additional travel around England and Wales. This will involve mobility to travel either by own car or public transport, and overnight accommodation if more than one day’s attendance is necessary

Person Specification

It is essential that the post holder has:

  • Significant experience in a related role, researching, writing and delivering a broad range of campaign materials and communications to a range of audiences in a range of ways
  • A high degree of interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to convey messages to different groups of people by adopting a range of styles, tools and techniques appropriate to the audience and nature of the information involved
  • A sufficient understanding and a proven ability of working collaboratively with key stakeholders, relevant external bodies and can develop and maintain effective working relationships with a range of people
  • Strong experience with research, interviewing and content management
  • We are looking for an experienced candidate with significant direct experience as a Communications professional
  • Demonstrable organisational and project management skills, along with attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines and synthesise information quickly and effectively
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new subject matter quickly and high intellectual curiosity
  • Effective interviewing skills
  • Professional business and/or technical writing experience
  • Preference working in a collaborative team environment
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, communications, journalism, English or related field is required
  • Enthusiasm, confidence, a strong professional work ethic and strong business acumen

It is desirable that the post holder has:

  • Experience of working within a communications function involving public sector and/or policing and political issues
