Terror threat level increased to critical
16 September 2017
The UK terror threat has been increased to its highest level following the Parsons Green Tube bomb.
Prime Minister Theresa May announced that the threat is now critical, meaning an attack is expected imminently, after a device was detonated on a District Line Tube at Parsons Green overground station injuring 29 people.
Mrs May said the military would once again be providing support to the police who will be seen more on the transport network and streets. She said: “This is a proportionate and sensible step which will provide extra reassurance and protection while the investigation progresses."
Assistant Commissioner at the Metropolitan Police and lead on national counter terrorism, Mark Rowley, requested the assistance of the military to ‘free up police firearms officers’. He urged the public to remain calm but vigilant, and raise any concerns or suspicions with the police.
The terror threat level was previously raised to critical in May after the Manchester Arena terrorist attack.
Calum Macleod, Vice-Chair of the Police Federation of England and Wales, said: “The increase in the terror threat to the highest level is of course of grave concern. As a service, the men and women we represent remain resolute and committed to keeping the public safe.
“This cannot be understated; every day police officers place themselves in harm’s way to protect the public, even though they are stretched like never before. The level of extreme terrorism that we are facing in the UK shouldn’t be underestimated, but the police service and its security partners will continue to do all they can.
“Our thoughts are with those affected by yesterday’s attack, and we pay tribute to the fantastic police officers - and other emergency services - who responded and continue to investigate in order to bring those involved to justice.
"We continue to stand tall in the face of danger - stay safe, look after each other and return home safely to your loved ones at the end of your tours of duty."
