Police Bravery Awards 2009 - Region 5: Hertfordshire officer scoops regional bravery award

16 July 2009

An officer from Hertfordshire has tonight received the South East regional award at the 14th annual Police Bravery Awards in London, organised by the Police Federation of England and Wales and The Sun Newspaper.

PC Arron Worbey received the award at a glittering award ceremony at The Dorchester Hotel which followed a reception at 10 Downing Street where he and 59 other nominees, met the Prime Minister, Gordon Brown.

During an altercation over drugs between two gangs in Letchworth, a gun was suddenly pulled and a member of the opposing gang was shot and seriously injured.

The youth who fired the gun was then set upon and badly beaten, left semi unconscious in the road where the incident had taken place. Off duty police officer, PC Worbey, who was nearby rushed to help the youth not knowing he had been the shooter.

PC Worbey alerted the control room and continued throughout to keep them in the loop as the situation developed.  Whilst this was going on, an associate of the shooter picked up the gun and aimed it at the gathering crowd.  PC Worbey, who at this time was on sick leave, tackled the man to the ground and took possession of the weapon before returning to administer aid to the other shooter.

Paul McKeever, Chairman, Police Federation of England and Wales said:

“PC Worbey displayed incredible courage throughout and demonstrated commendable dedication to protecting members of the public. His actions are an example to us all.”

Editor of The Sun Newspaper Rebekah Wade said:

“The Sun is tremendously proud of our association with the Police Bravery Awards and it is an honour for us to be sponsor this event for the 14th year.  All the officers recognised at this evening’s ceremony have displayed exceptional bravery and the incredible devotion to duty shown by PC Worbey makes him a very worthy winner. With little concern for his own safety he demonstrated the commitment of so many of Britain’s police officers today.”
