Extended use of Taser comment

19 July 2007

Following the announcement today by the government that the trial of taser will be extended to more officers, Jan Berry, chairman of the Police Federation of England and Wales, says:

“I welcome the taser announcement today by the Police Minister, Mr McNulty, who has been very supportive of our calls for officers to be given more protective equipment in the face of increasing assaults and dangers.

“Frontline officers on patrol never know what dangers they may face and currently have nothing to protect themselves apart from a baton and incapacitant spray which is often ineffective.

"Taser is a non-lethal way to tackle dangerous suspects and can provide improved protection to both officers and the public, not to mention the criminal.

“I hope this trial is a success, finally puts to bed the myth that taser is dangerous and we see frontline operational officers given the right safety equipment for the job."
