PC Henry murder comment
11 June 2007
Jan Berry, chairman of the Police Federation of England and Wales, says:
“Firstly, on behalf of the Police Federation, I wish to offer my condolences to PC Henry’s family, friends and colleagues. Policing is an inherently dangerous occupation and officer safety is paramount. This tragedy highlights the unknown dangers police officers face every day serving their local communities.
“Police officers must have the confidence that their equipment and training will protect them. We continually look at ways we can improve officers’ safety, through improvements to body armour, and the provision of non lethal weapons, such as baton rounds and taser. Whilst our survey last year of police officers throughout England and Wales showed that 77% rejected being routinely armed, they also expressed concern that there were insufficient numbers of firearms officers to call upon if needed.”
