Federation response to Assistant Commissioner John Yates

25 October 2007

Responding to complaints made by MPs over the length and duration of investigation and the subsequent criticism made of Assistant Commissioner John Yates, - Jan Berry, Chairman, Police Federation of England and Wales says:

“It seems a little rich that politicians are questioning the length of time taken over this enquiry. Police officers are frequently the subject of complaints  where lives and careers are put on hold for years, and where there is no satisfactory outcome.”

“Assistant Commissioner Yates thorough and painstaking inquiry should be celebrated not criticised. He epitomises the honesty, integrity and professionalism shown by police officers accountable to the law. Policing is for the protection and safety of the British public and must not be used as a tool for politicians to clamour and gesticulate over for the sake of opinion polls”.
